Deerfield Beach, FL — Congressional candidate Oliver Larkin, Democrat for Florida’s 23rd district, condemned Governor Ron DeSantis’ executive order designating the Council on American-Islamic Relations as a terrorist organization in the following statement:
“CAIR is the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States, and CAIR Florida has tirelessly defended the civil rights of student worshippers, protest groups, and the many proud Muslim Americans who call our state home,” Larkin said. “Freedom of religion and equal protection under the law are core concepts of our constitutional system—one that Governor DeSantis flagrantly violates with yesterday’s political stunt of an executive order.”
Larkin attended CAIR’s South Florida Gala in Fort Lauderdale in October and has consistently spoken out in support of CAIR’s work, including advocating for the release of 16-year-old Florida resident and U.S. citizen Mohammed Ibrahim from Israeli detention in the West Bank.
“Governor DeSantis is desperate to manufacture enemies from our neighbors as he and Donald Trump continue their authoritarian police state’s encroachment on our most fundamental freedoms and civil rights,” Larkin said. “In Congress, I will work alongside CAIR and other civil rights organizations to protect religious freedom, combat discrimination, and ensure that Muslim Americans—like all Americans—can enjoy the full freedoms and liberties that are the promise of the United States of America.”
