Housing
Stability, Affordability, and Security for All
Oliver first spoke out about South Florida’s housing and infrastructure crisis in 2017. Years later, the problems have only worsened—skyrocketing costs, insurance collapse, and a shortage of safe, affordable homes. In Congress, he’ll fight for bold solutions that protect homeowners, renters, and the future of our communities.
Homeowners Insurance
From South Florida floods and hurricanes to California wildfires, homeowners across the country are facing skyrocketing insurance costs—if they can even find a policy at all. Republicans’ climate denial is putting our homes, our economy, and our coastal communities at risk.
In South Florida, many longtime homeowners are being forced to pay out of pocket for costly seawall repairs and flood mitigation they can’t afford. Private insurers are gouging vulnerable families while shifting blame.
Oliver will support federal legislation to stabilize and lower property insurance rates—and hold insurers accountable for predatory practices.
Condo Assessments and Safety
The collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, which killed 98 people, exposed long-ignored structural risks in South Florida’s condo market. In the aftermath, massive assessments are being pushed onto individual owners—turning housing into a high-stakes financial game.
Oliver will fight for federal investment to help states and municipalities repair aging and vulnerable buildings. He supports grant funding for structural upgrades, so safety isn’t a luxury only the wealthy can afford.
Public Housing and Affordability
The Clinton-era Faircloth Amendment blocks federal investment in new public housing. Oliver will fight to repeal it.
He supports building millions of new, deeply affordable housing units and cutting out inefficient, underfunded intermediaries that slow down construction and drive up costs. Local governments must have the tools—and funding—to build the homes their communities need.
Oliver also supports:
Federal rent caps and stronger tenant protections
A national plan to end homelessness
Investments to ensure every child and every elder has a safe, stable place to call home
Housing is a human right—and Oliver will fight to make that right real for everyone.
